How to Write Service Page Copy That Actually Converts (A No-Fluff Guide for Small Business Owners)
You got them to your website. Maybe it was SEO, a referral, or a Google ad. Now they're on your service page, deciding whether to call you or hit the back button.
Most small business owners spend weeks on design and photography, then slap together the copy in an afternoon. That's backwards. Design catches the eye, but copy closes the deal. And most service pages are losing deals every single day.
The good news: you don't need to be a professional copywriter to fix this. You just need a framework. Here's the one we use.
The Golden Rule: Lead With the Problem, Not Your Credentials
Most service pages open with something like:
"Welcome to ABC Plumbing. We've been serving the Green Bay area since 1998. We are a family-owned business dedicated to quality and customer satisfaction..."
Your visitor doesn't care. Not yet. They care about their burst pipe, their leaking roof, or their website that looks like it was built in 2008.
Instead, open with the problem they have right now:
"A small leak under your sink can destroy cabinets, warp flooring, and turn a $200 fix into a $5,000 renovation — often before you even notice it."
This creates instant recognition. The visitor thinks, "That's me." And now they're reading.
Use the PAS Framework (It's Stupidly Effective)
PAS stands for Problem, Agitate, Solve. It's the simplest high-converting copy structure there is, and it works for every industry.
Problem: Name the pain point clearly and specifically.
Agitate: Make them feel the cost of not fixing it. What happens if they wait? What are they risking?
Solve: Show exactly how your service eliminates that risk. Be specific about the outcome, not just the process.
Example for a roofer:
- Problem: "Wisconsin winters are brutal on roofs. Ice dams, freeze-thaw cycles, and heavy snow loads cause damage that isn't always visible from the ground."
- Agitate: "By the time you see water stains on your ceiling, the damage has already spread to insulation, drywall, and framing. A small repair becomes a whole-room renovation."
- Solve: "Our winter roof inspection catches problems before they reach your living room. We document everything with photos, explain your options in plain English, and handle the repair in a single visit — so you sleep soundly through the next storm."
Write every service page using PAS and you'll already be ahead of 90% of your competition.
Specificity Beats Superlatives (Every Time)
"We provide quality service" means nothing. Everyone says that.
"We arrive within a 2-hour window, send a photo of your technician before they show up, and warranty our work for 5 years" means something.
Replace vague claims with concrete details:
| Instead of... | Try this... |
|---|---|
| "Fast turnaround" | "Most projects completed in 3-5 business days" |
| "Affordable pricing" | "Flat-rate quotes. No hidden fees. No surprises." |
| "Experienced team" | "15+ years fixing exactly this problem in [your city]" |
| "Satisfaction guaranteed" | "Not happy? We'll redo the work or refund your money. Period." |
Specificity builds trust because it's verifiable. Superlatives build skepticism because everyone uses them.
Run the "So What?" Test on Every Claim
Take any sentence on your current service page and ask: "So what? How does this help the customer?"
- "We use premium materials." So what? "Which means your roof lasts 10 years longer and your energy bills drop by $40 a month."
- "We have a certified team." So what? "Which means the job gets done right the first time, so you're not paying us to come back and fix someone else's mistake."
- "We offer 24/7 service." So what? "Which means when your furnace dies at 2 AM on a Sunday in January, you're not waiting until Monday morning with frozen pipes."
Every claim on your page needs to connect back to a customer benefit. Not a feature. A benefit.
Place Social Proof Where Skepticism Peaks
Don't bury your testimonials on a separate page. Place them right where doubt creeps in.
- After you make a bold claim, drop a customer quote that backs it up.
- After your pricing section, show a review mentioning value for money.
- After your process explanation, include a before/after photo with a short story.
One real review with a full name and photo beats ten generic star ratings. If you only have three great reviews, use those three strategically rather than hiding them on a testimonials page no one visits.
Give Them One Clear Next Step
The biggest conversion killer? Asking the visitor to choose between too many options.
Don't do this:
- "Call us"
- "Email us"
- "Fill out this form"
- "Learn more"
- "See our pricing"
- "Chat with us"
Do this: One primary action per page. Make it obvious, make it specific, and make it easy.
"Get Your Free Roof Inspection — Book Online in 60 Seconds"
The button text should complete the sentence "I want to..." "Learn More" doesn't complete that sentence. "Get My Free Quote" does.
Your 30-Minute Rewrite Checklist
- Rewrite your headline to name the customer's problem in their own words.
- Restructure your first 3 paragraphs using PAS.
- Swap out 3 vague claims for specific details with numbers, timeframes, or guarantees.
- Add one real customer quote near your pricing or process section.
- Simplify your CTA to one clear button with action-oriented text.
- Read it out loud. If it sounds like a brochure, rewrite it like you're explaining it to a friend over coffee.
The Bottom Line
Great service page copy isn't about being clever or using big words. It's about showing the customer that you understand their problem and have a proven way to solve it. Do that with specificity, empathy, and a clear next step, and your service pages will start working the way they're supposed to.
Most of your competitors are still writing copy that puts themselves first. Put the customer first, and you'll win the click — and the call.
